I'd say Deep Junior 12 is a must have for any serious chess player. Free engines that play like rybka are a dime a dozen. Junior has a unique attacking style that is great for analysis. Junior will quickly show you how to rip apart the enemy king position. As for strength, considering the older version drew against Kasparov and this version is stronger, I'd say it's plenty strong enough.

Junior - is a cr*ppy piece of s*it. If you want «to rip apart the enemy king position» use Critter or Spark. Thet both a free and much more stronger in tactics

Very true Jeremy!!

ELO isn't everything! Too many people who follow computer chess seem to forget that people use engines for various purposes. Junior actually serves MY purposes better than Critter so I don't mind paying for Junjor. And that is NOT a knock on Critter! Critter serves other people's purposes better than Junior might. I don't know why everyone has to feel like their "team" is better than the others.

Free vs. commercial is such a silly argument. There are some great commercial and some great free engines. Why does it have to be such a battleground???
