Quite surprised too that White managed to lose (though a draw would be unsurprising, especially as things like the passed b-pawn are difficult to evaluate). First reaction is the Ba7 became useless, and Black was able to co-ordinate pieces, and (finally) push the e-pawn. White was left to shuffle about (as a general rules, bishops do not support the advance of a passed pawn as well as other pieces).I thought this was a very interesting game...
Three pieces for a queen is never easy. I guess White can't activate the majors to harass the Black King, and his own King becomes endangered. Zero targets for the Queen also (Nunn/Griffiths mention this as a crucial element in "Secrets of Grandmaster Chess" with some of Nunn's similar sacs, though at times I think they over-rate the importance). Quite a diff in eval for an extended time there.Houdini did not see it coming...

The first game where IvanHoe lost was definitely a surprise...draw seems more "normal" given the position. Perhaps mobility penalty issue with it locking its own bishop. The second game shows Houdini's aggressiveness as it likes to push pawns...you see this when it plays ECO B21 Morra Gambit.BB+ wrote:Quite surprised too that White managed to lose (though a draw would be unsurprising, especially as things like the passed b-pawn are difficult to evaluate).
