1. e4 g6 2.f4?! How to counter that move?

Post by Hagen »

I'm having trouble as Black countering this move order my opponent as White makes and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me a specific series of moves to counter this. Thanks.

What do you normally play? I don't see why any plan that works against something else wouldn't work against f4.

Counter it with your move 1. e4 g6 and play something else there. :)

I guess You may either go for some kind of Grand Prix Sicilian (play ...c5, ...Nc6, ...e6, ...Nge7, keeping an eye on d7-d5), or simply ...d6/Nf6 without early c5, intending to transpose to Pirc Defense. For some time many of my games tended to start 1.e4 d6 2. f4 g6 3.Nf3 Bg7 4. Nc3 Nf6 - until my club opponents realized that looking for a direct refutation of the Pirc is decidedly unhealthy for them

Your suggestion, as bizarre looking as it is at first, doesn't seem to be all that bad. I tried a few mini-matches at a fairly fast time control (40/5) from that position, and black came out more than ok (>50% score for black, surprisingly).
