Re: Houdini 2
Now I am completely confused. Which side of this "copying is OK / copying is NOT OK" argument are you on? On one hand, you support Vas and his copying exploits, yet you then appear to be against anyone selling a copy of ip* just because they copied it?

My point is that sometimes cloning isn't immoral . See the second paragraph of my previous post.Uly wrote:Yeah, let's do all immoral things not punished by law.

I don't really like the word 'immoral', but 'unethical' is a pretty good description of taking someone else's code (regardless of the licensing) and releasing it as your own. As in under your own name, exclusively, and yes, this is irrespective of whatever improvements you've made.ThinkingALot wrote:My point is that sometimes cloning isn't immoral . Even if 45% of Houdini has been completely rewritten, hell, even if 95% of Houdini has been completely rewritten, Robert Houdart has a deeply unacknowledged debt to the Ippolit and Robbolito author(s) and contributors. The equivalent of "I went back and forth and took many things" [from Ippolit, Stockfish, etc.] doesn't cut it, especially given the dead-on identical evaluations produced by Robbolito and Houdini 1.0.
Eh, whatever. According to the playchess engine room, most people don't care about this stuff (about 12 standards and 12 pros playing right now). I'm glad that H1.5a is still free, I hope Robert raises some money for UNICEF, and expect that Houdini will continue to pants Rybka for some time to come. My money's on Critter and Komodo, though -- I would rather support hard-working, honest developers than throw my dough at people who take shortcuts. It's just a question of professional ethics.

Robert had to have known that going this route will not sit well with many, given Houdini's origin, even among his supporters. And I just read that Houdini collects and transmits your system info...

Re: Houdini 2
Only solution is to post the entire Houdini 2 source to the public. I hope Mr Osipov comes to his senses... but than again maybe not, unless Houdart has paid him well. Besides that I can not see what he can gain from any of this, except him protecting a liar and a thief without any moral ethics whatsoever.

This is a great illustration of the old saw "two wrongs don't make a right"...Damir Desevac wrote:Only solution is to post the entire Houdini 2 source to the public. Anyhow, the 2nd wrong has already occurred: Ida Pro pseudocode output has already been "released" on the immofo.
