the "clones" issue for a user point of view

Post by stvs »

greetings.
iam a computer chess user since zx-81 ,spectrum 16/48 era, and i have to say that i have never seen such big
computer chess progressive as nowadays. iam not a programmer neither copyright or ethical specialist.
the only thing that i know is without the "clones" (?) fruit-->rybka-ippo-houdini , we would stick to fritz shredder etc 2800 elo barrier.
now we have about 200+ elo better engines and i wonder if the "clones" issue will prove again that the witch hunting is not over
trying to stop the human progressive. i wonder which is more important than the human progressive
and i repeat as a user i prefer the progress than anything else. the rest is for those $ and witch hunters. tnx

Or, perhaps, for those with some small sense of ethics? Those that do not copy other's work without mentioning that fact. Those that do not copy code that is protected by legal licenses.

There is room for progress _and_ ethics. Computer chess developed pretty rapidly thru the 70's and 80's without this copying nonsense...

I do not say what product is legal or not. I choose between what is available. If tomorrow there is something I like better, I'll use. That's what I do with the products of all kinds on the market.

Yes, and it does not matter the increase in the strength, Maybe he a clever thief, but in the end he a thief
I suggest that we are make a black list containing each cloned engines

hello.
i just said iam not a programmer specialist. sure we have many respected programmers like bob,and they are experts to judge what
is ethical and what is clone etc. but as a user i wonder and ask if without rybka-ippo-houdini we would have engines with 200+ elo difference
would we have better engines than 2800 elo level fritz and shredder ? i dont know but i think in real life many progress is based
on small ethical, copy or "steal' issues ,i dont think that everything is original ,i dont think we can reach faster
progress without some ethical issues. maybe is the absolute originality just a utopia which slow down the speed of progress?
i dont know, thats why iam asking if we would have 3000 elo absolute original engines. u know the users needs the faster the better the smartest etc. as soon as possible! its the human nature :)

There are 3 Humans with elo above 2800. I would bet that Fritz and Shredder would destroy them all in a match.

Depends on hardware. :)

I would take the challenge with my iPhome 4 + Hiarcs.

1 GHz (?) CPU combined with ~3000+ Elo program shouldn't pose too much of a problem for GMs like Carlsen, Nakamura, Anand, etc...
