I never said Stockfish finding kc6 was not amazing :o , but the score of -5.37 indicates that it still thinks black is winning. Therefore, it does not know this is a fortress position. However, it does prove that stockfish has an amazing search, and yes it solved the problem, just not for the right reasons. :mrgreen:

I never said Stockfish finding kc6 was not amazing :o , but the score of -5.37 indicates that it still thinks black is winning. Therefore, it does not know this is a fortress position. However, it does prove that stockfish has an amazing search, and yes it solved the problem, just not for the right reasons. :mrgreen:
It did solve the problem for the right reason. It determined the line of play that best avoided losing! For a score of 0.00, Stockfish could simply appeal to a precomputed tablebase for

I will be shocked if any engine can solve this!
Every time this position comes up, I take pains to note that Patzer solved it a while back. See the blurb at http://www.rebel.nl/authors.htm

For my money, just getting an engine to give a draw score for 6k1/6P1/p6P/Pp6/1Pp5/4K3/8/8 w - - 0 0
is an accomplishment (as an "easy example" of something sort of like a fortress). Note that there aren't that many K-K pairs (less than 64*64), so a hash-solution is easily possible, but the fact that the search graph is not a tree (among other things) seems to preclude most engines from success.
