I've never seen any evidence that houdini 1.5a is weaker than 1.5. 1.5a is still the 2nd strongest engine in the world, next to 2.0c. CCRL, http://computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/4040/r ... t_all.html

Re: Fritz 8 access violation?
Surprisingly, chessbase still supports the Fritz 8 gui. You can download the update (gui8.iup) off thier server and this fixes the problem. Cheers.

Best performance on netbook w 2 core and 4 threads?
My netbook has an intel atom n570 with two cores and four threads. When I run the engines with 4 threads I'm having problems with the gui seizing up(old version of fritz). Should I reduce the cores to three? or two? or one? How would the engine utilize the cores if I set it to three?

Fritz 8 access violation?
I know this is just a shot in the dark since this program is very old, but maybe you guys remember a work around or something. When I try to change the engine parameters for Rybka 3, I keep getting an access violation message and the program crashes. It will let me save the engine parameter file ...

Has anybody tested HIARCS 14WCSC or Strelka 5.5?
I've seen this Hiarcs 14WCSC floating around; I'm not whether it's a beta copy or not? The Hiarcs site doesn't seem to be sure either; Some pages seem to suggest Hiarcs 14 had been releseased, others suggest it's unavailable.? The realease of Strelka 5.5 is also very interesting. I know 5.1 was ...

Re: DOS revival
I use D-Fend for Psion Chess, 1985. One of the toughest old engines. A very good challenge. I'm pretty sure it was world champ in 1987 or somewhere around there. These old engines are the best sparring partners, much better than the new ones. They can actually be beat playing real chess, not just ...

Re: Not able to test Stockfish 2.2.1 JA 64bit SEE4.2
I had this same problem with Deep Junior 12.5. Fritz doesn't like long filenames. You need to find the fritz engine file for stockfish and shorten the name. I don't use fritz anymore I switched to chess assistant so I can't remember exactly where the engine files are stored. I believe its something ...

Re: STS engine comparison: suggestions, criticism and help
I personally would love to see a STS comparison between all the top engines. I know someone did start a site a while back, but I'm not sure if they followed through with it.

Re: Engine styles for Analysis
The main difference between engine play and human play is that engines have no fear. They play extremely sharp lines without even a second thought. Humans ( most humans anyways) tend to stick to more positional long term plans. I think this is the only real advantage that humans have left, we can ...
