The Rf1 line brings about defeat much more quickly. Play it out a few moves and you'll see it is much more direct.
The pawn pushes (g4, g5) also seems to give the engines trouble.

Thanks for all the posts guys. Very interesting. It appears that Nxg7 is not easy to spot.
My dev version of Stockfish running on a i7-3970X @ 3.5GHz took about 10 minutes to see this line.
